6 Week Junior Beekeeping Course

Teaching young people about an apiary

The group: Thomas A Beckett and Lancing Prep Primary Schools in Worthing

The lowdown: The Bees&Seas project celebrated its launch and Apiary opening by offering a fully funded 6 week Junior Bee-keeping course to local schools.

The crew: A selection of year 4 and 5 children (9 & 10 years old) were put forward from their schools, after expressing an interest in nature and bees.

Edu session: We ran a FREE 6-week course after school at Brooklands Park. With all equipment, suits and learning material provided. The children just needed their wellies. The course begins w/c 12th July with the grand finale on the weekend of 20th August during our Bees & Seas festival. The course was ran by an experienced DBS checked beekeeper and the children were able to crack open hive Luna and hive Honeybun by the 3rd lesson.

In summary: From Misha Murphy and Jonathon Clemence – age 9:

We loved learning about the bees. That there are different types of bees that make up the colony. A queen bee, drone bees, and workers. That all bees work together like a big family. One of the best bits was honey spinning and tasting!
